Steve Jobs' Stanford commencement speech: Apple CEO on pancreatic cancer, death as inspiration

As tributes to Steve Jobs continued to pour in Thursday, some of the most poignant words about death echoed forward from a speech given by the Apple founder himself.
In an address to Stanford University graduates in 2005, Jobs spoke candidly about his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, revealing it was his brush with death that allowed him to innovate fearlessly.
"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life," Jobs said in a video clip which has gone viral since his death was announced late Wednesday. "Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

His decision to step down from his post as CEO six weeks ago seemed to confirm that his death was not only inevitable but imminent, but it seems Jobs had long ago accepted his fate.
"No one wants to die," he told the Stanford students. "And yet death is the destination we all share...It is life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away."

Six years after he delivered it, the speech still resonates with a generation of young people who have grown up in a world shaped in many ways by Jobs and his peers. Many fans remembered the visionary tech genius by sharing quotes from the address, often on the very devices he invented.

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life," Jobs said, one of many lines that rebounded across the Internet on Thursday. "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. I have always wished that for myself. And now...I wish that for you."

  1. Steve Jobs' speech makes me realize his experience and inspire me. There are many difficulties in his life, while he never gave up. He was fired by the company that he founded. But he came back at the end. He got cancer, which caused him despair. Fortunately, he recovered. I think he is an amazing man. And I think this speech is worth watching.

  2. I have seen the speech in Stanford University gradation Steve Jobs is the person who experienced winning and losing from his job. And he was a special guy; because for most people, they might follow others thinking, but Jobs didn't. He went on the way he wanted, not the way that others help him decide. Therefore, I think he was really a amazing person.

  3. After I listen the speech from the Steve Jobs' Stanford , it make me learn more wake for this speech ,and he is a never give up man ,and wather he just only have a few month he can live ,he also never waste his few month to think how can his do and to think .
